The Science Olympiad club participated in the annual Science Olympiad competition for the second time this past Saturday at Occidental College located in Eagle Rock.
A total of 14 team members met at the college campus early in the morning for their first events. Since each member had several different events, the whole day consisted of running around from building to building to arrive to their next event within the 10 minute break. Unlike last year, where there was a group of people who failed to show up at the competition, the club’s members were more reliable this time around. Fortunately, there were no major setbacks that affected the functionality of the team as a whole, but a minor accident occurred when one of the team members required medical attention.
The entire experience was quite enjoyable to them overall. Although they did not win any medals, they certainly did better compared to last year. The scores show they were in 33 place out of 40 teams but placed higher than many of the teams including STEM Academy of Hollywood. Despite rushing about so as not to be late and being slightly unprepared for some of their events, the “feeling of going into the event[s] and competing [was] quite memorable.”
The club’s president, Oscar Aguila, said, “Seeing everyone really enjoying themselves and having fun is quite fascinating to see.”
He said that he is planning to participate in next year’s competition as well and is looking forward to “the chance to do even better and have fun doing it.”
