The Theory of Everything was a brief history of Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) and the relationship he had with his first wife. The movie starts at his college years at Cambridge where he quickly meets Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones).

The movie establishes their relationship through a series of flashbacks before his condition (of Lou Gehrig’s disease) gets worse and begins to completely destroy his physical state. Through this struggle, Eddie Redmayne gives a great performance imitating Hawking’s recognizable physical form and the different stages of his condition  to how he is today. Felicity Jones also gives a great performance as she is struggles to take care of him and their 3 children. As time progresses, it can be seen that she loves him, but has difficulty to helping him.

As Hawking’s body is deteriorating, he looks for the one equation to explain the universe. The story focuses on his physical struggle and Jane’s emotional state and the story not many people know about how he came to be. This movie was a great window into Hawking’s life and what he has accomplished while dealing with a disease. The movie “tugged at the heartstrings” as it pained the audience to see him struggling to go up a flight of stairs with his child watching. This movie gives a very positive message that no matter what someone is going through, they can always persevere and achieve at something else.

Everything came together quite beautifully. There were no major setbacks in the movie other than it not focusing on one specific period in his life (it jumps a few years at a time). If you want to know more about the man Stephen W. Hawking, I recommend this movie. Overall The Theory of Everything was entertaining.
