Prom is known for its extravagant proposals from the simplest detail to extreme surprises. The purpose is to take ask that special someone and be ready to receive either the “Yes” or “No” answer. Some want it to be announced public, others prefer in private.
During the panorama picture, a student asked Dr. Brandy to tell all the seniors to not leave yet. Everyone was confused until he brought out a poster that said “Do you want to go to prom?” after pulling his prom date out of the audience and giving her a bouquet of roses. Another one occurred in a basketball game during half time when a basketball player asked the cheerleaders to help him ask his girlfriend out to prom who was also a cheerleader. They performed and carried the posters asking her to prom with everyone in the game witnessing the special occasion.
An interesting proposal occurred in one of Ms. Tobenkin’s classes, “ Well I was in my first period class and out of no where I receive a phone call from my best friend Alfredo and he tells me to look out of the window.” said Margarita Rivera, SAS senior. “I tell him I’m in class yet he insist I do.” The moment she get up from her seat she looks out of the window and receive the unexpected surprise seen her friends holding the posters spelling out the word prom with a question mark. “I was without words, I couldn’t help but smile and laugh and then through the phone I say ‘yes, yes!’ and then he says ‘why don’t you turn around and say it to my face’ and that’s when I turn around to see him holding a bouquet of flowers.”
In today’s generation, there are other ways social media is used to let people know that these special events did happen and share it with their friends. Laura Moreno was asked to prom by her friend Rony Simon both SAS seniors. During school time, when she went to different areas of the school she came across different posters ending together saying “ Hey Laura, will you go to prom” with Rony holding flowers and receiving a yes from her friend. “ I was surprised this was different because he was my friend so we had already talked about it…he went down from every detail about everything from my favorite color to my favorite flower there’s nothing wrong going with my friends I mean before I was going with my friends.”
There are variety of ways to ask from creating a message on food such as spelling out the word prom with pepperoni on a pizza, surprising that person by taking out all of their textbooks from her locker and leaving a meaningful teddy bear with chocolates, to doing flash mobs in front of a random public. Here are some examples and ideas to help create a unique prom proposal (although be aware be safe and do not go too far):
- A guy was stopped by a police for speeding, but when he looks at he care window thinking he was gong to receive a ticket, it was his best friend actually giving him a ticket (not a real ticket) asking him to go to prom with her.
- Two seniors where on their way home from a movie date and the boyfriend was dropping off his girlfriend. When they arrived home was shocked and speechless to see outside of her house the symbol of Batman spelling out prom. Even heroes can save the day for that special someone.
The most important part of it all is to enjoy the magical night with a significant other whether it is with a friend, soulmate, or lover.
