The Angry Video Game Nerd has, for many years, suffered through some of the worst games for Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Atari, and Sega systems. His YouTube channel, CineMassacre, with over 1.5 million subscribers, is home to his “reviews” of these games. For almost 10 years he has criticized anything and everything about the games he plays. It can range from unresponsive controls to horrendous graphics, or just downright stupid plots like a kid getting sucked into his TV.
AVGN Adventures starts off with James Rolfe, the creator of AVGN, playing a game with his friends, when all of a sudden his friends get sucked into the TV and James gets dragged in by a claw that grabs onto his nether region and pulls him in. This game is filled with easter eggs and references to his videos and puts in a lot of the things that James complains about in his videos. Even though the game puts many cheap shots in order to kill you, the controls are really responsive so the only person at fault is yourself. You can choose between three difficulties in the beginning: Easy, Normal, and Old School. The first difficulty gives you unlimited lives while the next two gives you 30 and 15 lives per level, respectively. Harder difficulties will be unlocked after beating the previous difficulty. Depending on the difficulty you choose, you will get checkpoints and more health to make the traverse much easier but still hard enough that it gives a challenge.
This game is filled with everything possible to be in a M-rated game. There’s blood, violence, alcohol, and nudity just to name a few. Pretty much anything said in this game will be filled with curses. The stage select references many games James has played, such as Castlevania and Street Fighter: 2010. Some are game-specific, and some are level specific, like having a snow level where everything is slippery. Some of the stages include Happy Fun Candy Time, Boo! Haunted House, and Thy Farts Consumed along with other, much more vulgar, stages.
Fans of the series will have a field day with this game and all of its references to other YouTube video gamers. Even if you have never seen the show, the game itself is a total homage to late 1980s gaming. This is a game that everyone has to try out as soon as possible. Be sure to pick this game up on the 3DS, Wii U, or PC.
