Put on Some Real Clothes

Spring’s here so the weather keeps getting warmer and warmer, which means guys and girls are pulling out the summer wardrobe- tank tops and shorts. The weather doesn’t only bring out this wardrobe, but it challenges the very strict dress code in schools, so how far should we go to show some skin?

Dress codes are necessary, but this isn’t really exactly fair to girls, because our restriction list is way longer than the boys’. But this is because girls at school are giving the staff a reason to be so strict. Students would like to think that it’s sexism, but it’s not.

Showing skin isn’t banned, but showing too much is. Most girls think the reason is because showing cleavage, midriff, and leg is “distracting” to boys (it is a small reason). But the bigger reason is students are young and should have some self-respect and not look so inviting. Just because it’s hot doesn’t mean one should go ahead and come to school in a bra and Daisy Dukes.

Teachers also have dress codes, and most careers have dress codes. School is trying to train students to be adults. School is trying to teach students to listen to the rules of having a job or career. The staff are also living humans, they feel the heat too, but they aren’t going around showing off their bodies.

Maybe dress codes are a little too strict, but its a good thing to have  when it comes to how much show your body. Students would do well just to know their limit, girls especially. Meet the school dress code halfway. Wear shorts, but with a t-shirt that is covering your whole stomach. Wear a tank top, but with your legs covered. And for guys, its pretty simple-  just don’t flash your nipples and underwear, because just like girls have restrictions, guys should too. Its not like students are working so hard outside in the heat. We’re going to classrooms with air conditioning.
