One Less Class but More Time

Susan Cifuentes Entertainment Editor I am going to address the question on everybody’s mind: is the new schedule for next year better than the living purgatory we have been put through this year. No, no it is not. The problem about the new schedule is the extra minutes we are going to be in school. Going from 3:04 to 3:07 is not a lot, just three minute difference but that is not the point. The whole reason they abolished the seven periods is because of the longer class periods. However, with the new schedule we also have longer classes than our 50 minute periods. To make matters worse, they totally took the whole point of going back to 6 periods. Those who wanted 6 periods wanted advisory. They needed their fifteen minute talk, sleep, study hall free time. What happened to democracy? I know for a fact that from the student surveys conducted, the majority wanted advisory. What was the whole point of asking student’s opinion when in the end we did not get anything that we wanted . We fought and we lost. We are still fighting against the injustice to the wind. No one is taking account my personal feelings? And why should they? I am just a student attending high school, seeking opportunities,  and good effective methods in school that will get me to college. These methods involve getting what I want. Many students now want to go to seven periods because it means having advisory. The extra class will allow me to earn more credits for graduation. Yes, the periods would be even longer than 50 minutes, it will not matter. We have already seen what a block schedule will do to the classes and the results are not that bad. Having four classes a day allows us to have less homework per night. Unlike having all our classes everyday and then doing all the homework for them in one night. What every student wants is to have less homework per night and to have more time during classes to finish any work. Unfortunately, the school has taken more consideration into this situation, then for those students, that would like to have 7 periods in order to make up credits and classes. Unfortunately with the 6 period (no advisory) schedule, students GPA will be reduced as well as their opportunity of taking more elective classes and earning more credits.
