The Swim team’s varsity and JV teams competed against Bernstein High School on April 2, and Los Angeles High on April 9. They had a meet against Maywood Academy High School on April 30.

Both the girls’ Varsity and JV team have lost a single game against Maywood on a 5-1 streak. The boy’s Varsity and JV teams have both lost a single game against Los Angeles High and now have a 5-1 record.  The team has been at a disadvantage because of problems that have plagued the pool.

The chlorine levels are too high, and there has been a lot of flooding. The pool custodian has been out sick and will return in May. The pool custodian from Los Angeles High School has been coming in twice a week to handle concerns regarding the pool.

“I hope the school district sends someone temporary, but they don’t have anybody available at the moment for a pool custodian,” said plant manager Frankie Muniz.

The valve in the pool functions similarly to a toilet’s draining and refilling. The valve got stuck, which caused kept the pool from draining, causing it to overflow. The flooding disrupted two days of swim.

According to Captain Christy Echeverria, the lifeguard helped to alleviate the flooding, but the problem remains. “It makes us work harder because the increase in water puts more effort into swimming,” said Christy.

Also, the LA High pool custodian put in too much chlorine, which made the pH level in the pool too high, which could have caused dry, irritated skin.

Swim team coach, Vlad Lando said, “Everyone worked really hard and practiced on land.” For about two weeks the team avoided the water.

The swim team has had postpone practice continuously due to the pool’s high chlorine levels and floods. Since the school’s pool custodian has been out on sick leaves several different LAUSD custodians have been put in charge to clean the pool.
