Seventeen year old Cassie had a mother, a father, and a brother before the invasion happened. She first lost her mother, then her father and finally her younger brother was taken away from her by the Others. The Others attacked Earth in an order of waves. An alien species that humans do not know what they came to Earth for. To Cassie only the unlucky ones survived the four waves and now she awaits for the fifth to come. This is the new world, trusting anyone is not an option because they can be an Other.

Cassie is different from any other main character of a dystopian novel. She is strong willed and even in such awful times she keeps some sense of humor and her sarcasm. She is absolutely on her own after her parents’ deaths and her brother being gone. The only person she can rely on, is herself. Love and will won’t  keep her alive. Fear does. The fear of dying and the fear of her being the last human left is what keeps her going. She says, “Because if I am the last one, then I am humanity. And if this is humanity’s last war, then I am the battlefield.”

The Fifth Wave is an incredible read. Rick Yancey is amazing on how he bases this book. It is not all about an alien invasion and a young girl surviving through it. It is about humanity and the fear that lives inside of all us. When you read this book you will stumble upon spectacular quotes that will make you stop and think about them. For example, “How do you rid the Earth of humans? Rid the humans of their humanity.” Yancey voices other characters besides Cassie and gives us a peek on what is going through their minds. The Fifth Wave will leave you craving more and it may even open your eyes to a new light.
