LAUSD currently requires 210 credits to graduate. These credits are mainly awarded via the core classes such as math, science, history, etc. By the time a student is a senior, most of them will have completed the required amount of years taking these core classes and thus all their credits needed to graduate.
Our school currently does not offer scheduling accommodations such as early release, late arrival, or even early graduation to seniors that have completed all graduation requirements. As a result, instead of taking core classes like a student would have as an underclassmen, they take electives. These electives are a contentious topic. Some think that since they aren’t needed to graduate, they are just fluff classes of sorts–merely existing to fill up a student’s schedule. Others feel that these classes are a fun opportunity, like a break from the mundanity of the core classes.
