The new Mean Girls movie is coming out this Friday, Jan. 10, 2024

While some may assume that the movie is a replication of the original 2004 film, it is based on the 2017 Broadway production.

Arturo Perez Jr. and Samantha Jayne are co-directing the film. Tina Fey who wrote the original film and Broadway production contributed to this new version as well.

Renee Rapp, who played Regina George in the original Broadway production, is set to play Regina George in the new movie.

Auli’i Cravalho, who played Moana, will play Janis, and Jaquel Spivey, who starred in Broadway’s A Strange Loop, will play Damian.

Avantika and Bebe Wood will join the cast as Regina’s “Plastics”, Karen and Gretchen, and Christopher Briney who starred in The Summer I Turned Pretty will appear as Aaron Samuels. Tina Fey and Tim Meadows will reappear in their movie roles as Ms. Norbury and Principal Duvall.

In an interview with Seth Meyers, Fey said that the songs from the film will be a lot more “pop” compared to the ones in the musical. “In Broadway, everything has to play in the back of the house and in movies everything can come back in and things can play really intimately,” she said.

Trailers hint that Regina George may be a member of the LGBTQIA+ community causing various reactions. Additionally, cast members are more diverse than in the original 2004 film. Furthermore, people are curious how the music will differ or stay the same as the Broadway adaptation.

Anticipated fans are excited about this release of Mean Girls and curious to see if it will be as iconic as the original.
