As Hollywood High School’s theater department prepares for its production of Little Shop of Horrors in the spring, auditions are soon to be underway. Little Shop of Horrors is a fusion of blues and horror, yet comedy and rhythm as it all comes down to a carnivorous plant and romance taking place in a flower shop in the 60’s. “It’s a really popular show and was originally from two movies,” Said Tres Dean, Hollywood’s theater director and teacher.
Auditions require acting and vocals represented by a comedic, one minute monologue from any source, and a less than 90 second vocal selection of your choice either with or without background music. Students will also be taught a brief dance combination in small groups of other auditioners, illustrating your movement and dancing artistry. “The auditions will be more detailed for Little Shop of Horrors,” Said Dean.
Following auditions, some students will be called back the following week to read from the script and may be asked to prepare dialogue or vocal selections from the show, but if you aren’t called back, it doesn’t mean you’re not in the show, according to Dean. There are still opportunities in the show whether you are acting a lead role or are in the ensemble.
Rehearsals will begin the week of Jan. 29 through April 24, 2024, and it is vital that students are available for after school rehearsals taking place from 3:45 – 5:45, Monday through Friday, as well as Saturday rehearsals on April 6, April 13, and April 20 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Some rehearsals may not be needed for certain characters or parts of the show and of course exceptions can be made for other school related activities and personal appointments, as long as they are documented before a rehearsal.
Audition dates are Jan. 29 – 31 in room 503 during fifth and sixth periods throughout the week. Students wishing to audition must sign up for audition times at the link below and complete a registration form, and will be excused from class.
The performances will take place on April 25 and May 3 at 7 pm, April 26 and May 4 at 7 pm, and April 27 and May 5 at 2 pm, all portraying the failing flower shop on Skid Row, and it’s suddenly booming business caused by a bizarre, flesh-eating plant as it demands more and more.
