The Associated Student Body will be hosting its annual spring blood drive on Friday April.21 inside the big gym.

The drive will be held from 8:45 am to 2:45 pm and anyone who is over 16 and meets the height and weight requirements is invited to donate. And yes, if you do donate blood at this blood drive, you will be given the snoopy t-shirt.

To donate blood, you must be over 16 years old and have parental consent. Those who are over 17, however, do not need to have the parental consent form filled out. Additionally, you must meet the height and weight requirements. For males, you just have to weigh over 110 pounds, regardless of height. However, for females, the weight requirement will be dependent on how tall you are. Below is a chart of the corresponding height and weight requirements for females.

There has been a recent uptick in blood donations among younger donors. This can be attributed to the recent collaboration between “Peanuts” and the Red Cross. Anyone who donates blood before April 23 will be able to get a free snoopy T-shirt. The T-shirt has become a much sought-after item, especially among Tik Tok users. Blood donations have reportedly risen by more than 40 percent compared to the week before according to CNN.

You should get at least eight hours of sleep along with drinking lots of water and eating iron-rich foods prior to donating blood. According to the Red Cross’s website, “As a blood donor, you donate one pint of blood, which your body quickly replaces.” Taking precautions before donating blood will help ensure the process goes smoothly.

Donating blood saves lives. From cancer patients to survivors of traumatic injuries, blood donations have helped save millions of people.

“This is my first time donating blood, so I am very nervous,” said Sara Borja, an SAS junior. A lot of my friend’s last blood drive, they did it, but I didn’t because I didn’t fit the requirements but now that I fit the requirements I felt like doing it because I like helping and supporting people and the community.”

Sign-ups for the blood drive began March 20th and run through April 19th. To sign-up, you can sign-up with any ASB member.
