Crimson Chronicle Reporters
Both Varsity and Junior Varsity lost against the mighty Cobras last Friday night with an ending score 31-21 for varsity and 21-0 for JV, marking this loss against Miguel Contreras High as the team’s fourth loss in a row.

Varsity began their season this year with a rough start having a three game losing streak and only two wins. The varsity football team ended the first game of the year on Aug. 29, with a win against Panorama High School 27-13. They defeated Augustus Hawkins High School 14 -8 on Sept. 6. It was not until Sept. 13, when the Sheiks were defeated by Rancho Dominguez High School with a dismal 26-16. With the next two games the team begins to add on to their losing streak having lost to Chavez High School with a score of 7-6 and Westchester with a devastating score of 25 to 6 and now another lost against Contreras.

The most heartbreaking loss was the game against Chavez High School. During the second half of the game the team scored a touchdown having a score of 6-0. Chavez’s football team was able to tie Hollywood. As the game approached the end, Chavez scored another touchdown as Hollywood followed with its own touchdown.

The touchdown, however, was not counted due to the player having fumbled the ball as he reached the touchdown area. This was another devastating loss for the football team since earlier junior varsity had lost to Chavez with a score of 14-0.

After having a four-game losing streak the varsity Sheiks hope to improve by winning at the upcoming game against Belmont High School. Some of the obstacles that have prevented the team from being successful in previous games have been the communication between players, organization and injuries of the players.

Varsity coach Frank Galvan wishes to improve these problems as well as others such as little but noticeable mistakes and having the team become more dedicated. He expects the team to be as competitive as they can be against other high school teams. Football players also believe that they need to help each other and play as a team in order to improve as a whole and win against other teams.

Now, as they continue to improve their skills as a team, their ambition is to become a better team and win against the difficult upcoming games. The coach believes Bernstein would be the most challenging game although he considers all games to be difficult. The football players Aron Kaplan, Austin Quintanilla and Roney Simon also consider both of those games to be formidable.

JP: Since my sophomore year. Three years, one year in JV and two years in Varsity.

CC: Why did you decide to join football?

JP: I love the game and its a good way to release stress.

CC: What was one of your best moments you had in football?

JP: It was my first full on football game, I was playing quarterback and we were winning, so all I had to do was take a knee (kneel down to get the clock continuing) so I took the knee and we won.

“Everyone did their best, but sadly they did not make it to the next round,” said senior, Karla Hernandez.

Those students were Dulce Mandujano in the high jump event, Karyos Tyus in the high jump event, Jackai Hernandez in the pole vault event, Andrew Vargas in the pole vault event, Ronald Clayton in the 100 meter dash, Alfredo Robles in the 2 mile event and Karla Hernandez in the 2 mile event.

Although the team was not able to move on, they did do very well in the central league finals on May 9 at Belmont High School, coming in third place overall. Both the boys varsity and girls varsity team won numerous events advancing them to city prelims. Frosoph boys placed in third while girls placed last. Sophomore Issael Castro did exceptionally well, winning first place gold medals in both the 800 meter event and mile run. It was the last meet of the year for all five schools including Bernstein, Belmont, Miguel Contreras LC and Robert F. Kennedy High School. Bernstein High School placed first.

“My four years have been a joy ride and it sadly has to come to an end. These have been best years of my life, ”said Karla Hernandez.

Hollywood’s swim team raced against Los Angeles High’s swim team on Apr. 17 as a home meet. JV girls won 84-0, varsity girls won 91-75, and varsity boys lost 59-104.

As always, the swim team remained supportive no matter what. Everyone was cheering for each other encouraging the swimmers to keep on going.

SAS senior Cindy Barron kept yelling “Pull! Pull!” to encourage her teammates to keep going.

The meet was very competitive with swimmers coming in close to each other in time.

Swim season is soon coming to an end with only one meet left and then the League Finals. All the swimmers are looking forward to winning their next meets even though they will be away meets.

“The season is going well for our varsity girls,” said Sharon Santos, team manager and SAS senior. “Not so much for our varsity boys but we are trying to hang in there. We are looking forward to league finals!”

Seniors on the team are making each moment count by trying their best and making their time in the water as memorable as possible. Barron said, “It is very hard for me especially after every meet I realize I am getting closer to the end of the swim season and it makes me sad. But overall, I love the team and the friendships.

The swim team won their meet against Belmont High School on Mar. 4, 2013. Though it was a preseason meet, the swim team took it as seriously as they would a real meet.

Both boys and girls won their races against Belmont because Belmont’s swimmers were mostly newcomers, making it an easy win. The boys’ team won 69-36 and the girls won 119-22. This swim meet was a practice round for what the swim team is to expect when the season actually starts on Apr. 3.

Everyone in the swim team was happy with their win and are looking forward to winning more meets this upcoming season.

Swim Captains SAS senior Rebekka Grammenos and TCA junior Chris Gamez are excited to see what their team can bring.

“The last swim meet was not as competitive as [the meet with] Carson due to Belmont not having enough swimmers,” said Gamez. “But swim this season looks really good and we look forward to competing against other schools.”

The swim coach, Vlad Lando, has been coaching at Hollywood High for 5 out of his 38 years of swimming experience and has led the team to victory numerous times. Lando said, “The goal is to take first place in the league and qualify for prelims.”

Swimmers are also looking forward to this upcoming season as well. New swimmer, SAS senior Luisa Iturbide, said “Swim is awesome! The people are great and everyone is really supportive. I love the sport. My only regret is not joining freshman year.”

Touchdown for the Seniors in their win against juniors girls 32-20 at the annual powderpuff game last Friday evening. In this year’s game it was a close call for the juniors, seniors score the winning touchdown within the last two minutes of the game. Throughout the entire game Juniors were ahead in the game, seniors desperately were scared that Juniors might called victory.
The intensity in the field rise within the last two minutes when Senior Kelly Flores number 47 scored the winning touchdown. SAS Kimberly Sotelo scored two touchdown for the juniors putting the juniors ahead of the game for the first and second quarter.

After the pep rally the bleachers began to filled in. Drum line, dance guard and cheerleaders fired up the crowd as they watch the battle of Seniors vs. Juniors. Throughout the game referees blew their whistles countless of times calling out both the seniors and juniors. During half-time referees warned coaches that if they were to see anyone use violent tactics one more time the game would cancelled and over.
