AP English Language eleventh graders attended the eighth year of participating in the Junior Defense of Thesis at the Los Angeles Metropolitan Water District on May 22.

The students wrote 15-page research papers on the topic of outdoor water conservation. Twenty seven students went to this event and six presented their thesis in front of a panel of judges. Students answered questions from the judges after the presentation.

“The Water District is a place to take students to have an outside world experience,” said James Carmicle, SAS English teacher. “It is an actual corporation. I’m really happy to provide them with the chance of an actual world audience and to leave the high school environment.”

Students were enthusiastic. “It was sophisticated. Really great experience. The judges were very serious and they treated us like adults,” said Nancy Martinez, SAS junior

This field trip benefited the students because they had an experience in the professional world. They improved or discovered their speaking, presenting, and thinking skills.

“It was really good!,” said Melany Jimenez, SAS junior. “A lot of professional, educated, and nice people. Very nice building too! It was a wonderful experience!”

Junior Prom has been canceled because only about 40 juniors bought tickets for the event.

Juniors now have to put up with the consequences of such actions, which is risking senior prom in the gym and being unable to book the Hollywood Bowl, since both needed a down payment. Junior prom is typically a fundraiser for senior year.

“I think it matters to the people who would’ve wanted to go. It actually sounded like fun,” said Jennifer Lopez, PAM junior.

Some students were unhappy with the theme of Flashback Friday.

“It is not a great idea nor a horrible idea for a theme for the dance,” said Keila Ayala, PAM junior. “ It is not a theme the juniors picked out. It was picked out by the senior class and was handed to us. I would of liked it better if the juniors had picked the theme.”

Juniors still have an opportunity to get back on track, but action needs to be taken now and not until later when it’s too late, by starting off with going to the junior meetings every other Wednesday. There everyone can discuss issues and concerns as well as fundraising ideas, which is a big issue all in itself.

“I did not like the theme for junior prom this year. It was too cheesy and I dislike 80’s music,” said Catherin Claros, PAM junior.

Different opinions can sometimes lead to disagreements, which can again be resolved at the important meetings if things are going to be done. Juniors should prepare to face hardships and action should be taken soon if they truly want to graduate at the Hollywood Bowl and have an exquisite ball at a private venue, instead of the school’s large gym.

This year’s junior prom theme will be Flashback Friday, starting from 7pm to 11pm in the large gym on Friday, April 12th, 2013. The price will start at $10 presale and will increase to $25 at the door.

With Flashback Friday as the theme, students can wear 80’s, 90’s, and modern outfits. Kaiser Permanente will provide healthy, delicious food. For entertainment, there will be a live band, playing 80’s music.

Here’s a quote from the vice president of junior council herself, Barrina Thompson, “I encourage everyone to go no matter what grade you are in. Proceeds will go to the class of 2014, so buy your tickets as soon as possible. I look forward to seeing you all…at the dance.”

Having financial problems and worried about not being able to buy prom dresses? Don’t worry because Project Prom Queen is here to save the day! Project Prom Queen is the project that accommodates prom dresses to any female student that continues with academic excellence!

Students can also submit applications to win free makeup and hair for the day of their prom! To apply and receive the dress and/or free hair and makeup, one must fill out an application online at www.AllGoodThingsInc.com under the “Projects” tab. The application deadline is April 13.
