Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians book series will be getting a live action adaption on Disney Plus on Wednesday, Dec. 20. This adaptation will be a TV series, opposed to its first attempt at adaptation.

The Lightning Thief, the first installment of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, was released on June 28, 2005. With overwhelming success, Riordan went on to release four more Percy Jackson books, and multiple different series that take place within the same world. Due to this critical acclaim, on Feb. 12, 2010, 20th Century Fox released their film adaptation of The Lightning Thief. Fans and critics alike were generally unhappy with the handling of the material. The studio released one more disliked movie on Aug. 7, 2013 before giving up on the series.

After the release of those two films, Disney bought 21st Century Fox in 2019. Since this acquisition, fans had been begging the studio to try again with adapting the book series. Not long after the acquisition, the studio gave in, and officially announced a new adaptation of the series was in development in May 2020. And on Nov. 16, 2023, the official trailer was released, and accumulated 84.3 million views within ten days. The first season of the new series will cover the first book, and the other seasons will follow the next four books.
